1. Chemical Composition

  • Monohydrate Lithium Hydroxide (LiOH·H2O): Contains one molecule of crystallization water. Chemical formula: LiOH·H2O. Molecular weight: 42.
  • Anhydrous Lithium Hydroxide (LiOH): Free of crystallization water. Chemical formula: LiOH. Molecular weight: 24.

2. Physical Properties

  • Monohydrate Lithium Hydroxide:
    • Appearance: White crystalline powder.
    • Solubility: Highly soluble in water.
    • Stability: Relatively stable in air but should be kept dry.
  • Anhydrous Lithium Hydroxide:
    • Appearance: White fine granules or powder.
    • Solubility: Highly soluble in water, slightly soluble in alcohol.
    • Stability: Strong hygroscopicity. Should be stored in a sealed container to prevent moisture absorption and carbonation.

3. Chemical Properties

  • Monohydrate Lithium Hydroxide: Loses crystallization water when heated to 130-140°C, converting to anhydrous lithium hydroxide.
  • Anhydrous Lithium Hydroxide: Decomposes into lithium oxide and water at high temperatures (around 600°C).

4. Applications

  • Monohydrate Lithium Hydroxide:
    • Mainly used for the preparation of lithium-ion battery cathode materials (e.g., NCM, NCA, and other ternary materials).
    • Also used as laboratory reagents, for lithium salt production, and as additives in lubricating greases.
  • Anhydrous Lithium Hydroxide:
    • More suitable for the preparation of high-nickel ternary cathode materials.
    • Also used as a CO2 absorbent (e.g., in aerospace and submarines), analytical reagents, and photographic developers.

5. Cost and Processing

  • Monohydrate Lithium Hydroxide: Lower production cost. However, additional dehydration may be required during use, which can increase energy consumption and process complexity.
  • Anhydrous Lithium Hydroxide: Higher production cost. However, it has higher purity and is more convenient to use, making it suitable for applications with high purity requirements.
