The main sources of polyols include:

Natural products: Polyols can be extracted from certain plants and vegetable oils, such as soybean oil and castor oil, through a specific chemical reaction process to produce plant polyols.
Biodiesel byproducts: Polyols are also a byproduct of biodiesel production as an inexpensive industrial feedstock.

Chemical synthesis:

Polyether polyol: formed by ring-opening polymerization with oxidized olefin under the action of catalyst by a compound containing active hydrogen as a starting agent.
Polyester polyol: from polyacid and polyol mixed dehydration condensation.
Brewing process: In the brewing process, polyols are obtained from saccharomyces cerevisiae by fermentation of sugar, and its yield is affected by the type of bacteria, quantity, fermentation rate and the composition of fermented grains. For example, the sweet taste in liquor is mainly derived from the polyols in the wine, such as glycerol, butanediol, inositol and mannitol.
